Support CCB Dancers in Puerto Rico!

November 20, 2019 by Canyon Concert Ballet

Canyon Concert Ballet has been invited to send three of our dancers/faculty to Puerto Rico to participate in the Danza en el Tablao event. This event for our dancers will run from January 29 – February 3, 2020 and we are looking to raise $1200 to support their trip!

You can make a donation for this amazing opportunity here – thank you!

It is with great pleasure that two CCB dancers and our school director will be a part of such a special event: Jenna Smith, Emma Kimbal, and Analia Weber. During their stay, our school director, Analia Weber, will also be offering a free master class to dance students on the island. This is a great opportunity to foster future artistic collaborations and dance education opportunities for our dancers, and a true honor for us to be invited to participate! Your donation will support the three dancers by helping with travel costs (flights, shuttles, food). If more money is raised than is spent for this opportunity, additional funds will be saved for future dance education opportunities for our dancers and faculty.

Danza en el Tablao/ Floorboard Dances

This event was started in 2008 by the renowned dancer and choreographer Paulette Beauchamp in the historic building of Cuartel de Ballaja. Located in front of El Castillo del San Felipe el Morro, the Cuartel de Ballaja was built from 1854 to 1864 in order to house the Spanish and Puerto Rican regiments in Old San Juan. Nowadays, the Cuartel de Ballaja houses the following: a dance school, a music school, the Museo de las Americas, the Puerto Rico Academy of Spanish Language, and the State Office of Historic Conservation. Inspired by the beauty and history of the building, Paulette Beauchamp created the Floorboard Dances. The performances happen two Fridays a month and the event is the host of many important dance figures on the island.

This year, Paulette has wanted to reach out to those that have left the island as a way to continue to grow its roots to the mainland. Paulette Beauchamp is a graduate of State University of New York at Purchase. She has danced classical repertory with Ballet Concierto of Puerto Rico and modern repertoire with Sarah Stackhouse and Kevin Wynn from the José Limón Dance Company. In her personal choreographic search, Paulette finds rhythmic richness, gesture and color in influences as varied as her own Afro-Caribbean culture, classical ballet, contemporary dance, the contrasting drama of ancient Japanese tradition, and other styles of theater that include illusions and masks.

Class Spotlight: Hip Hop

October 8, 2019 by Canyon Concert Ballet

Canyon Concert Ballet has two Hip Hop classes (one for youth, and one for teens and adults), taught by Ms Savannah.  Learn more about this fun dance class!

Class Description:  Hip-hop has evolved from many dance trends, such as breakin’, poppin’, lockin’, the moonwalk…the list goes on and on. Take hip-hop and dip into the realm of freestyle and develop your own urban style under the guidance of our experienced and fun instructors!

What is your favorite part about this class?

Hip Hop has such a deep and diverse history and I love how it comes alive in class. Everyone has their own style and passion and I think the freedom of the style allows for that individuality to come out more.

Which song is your favorite to dance to in this class?

Oh my goodness…this is hard! Anything Beyonce. Always Beyonce. I love to play with different songs and beats and mix them together. My fiancé is a DJ so we are constantly cutting and creating music.

How long have you been teaching dance?

I started as a TA when I was 15 and have been in some sort of teaching capacity since…so almost 15 years!

Anything else you’d like people to know about this class?

There are so many styles of Hip Hop that I think there is something there for everyone. I encourage all dancers, no matter level of experience, to take a class and see if they connect with the style!

Hip Hop happens for youth on Thursdays at 6:30pm and for teens and adults on Thursdays at 7:30pm with Ms Savannah.  Register for Hip Hop class today!

Meet Your Teacher: Ms Vanessa

October 1, 2019 by Canyon Concert Ballet

Get to know teacher Ms Vanessa better!

Vanessa Hearn

Vanessa Hearn began her dance training at CCB at the age of 3.  A dedicated student, she became a member of the CCB company at age 15 and has taught ballet focusing in the Vaganova and RAD techniques for 6 years at CCB.  In addition to teaching, Vanessa has also choreographed numerous dances and set pieces for the CCB company. Vanessa is trained in several dance disciplines including: Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Tap, Hip Hop, Swing, and Salsa, and has performed in over 50 productions. She enjoys teaching children and adults alike.  She trained under Mia Michaels of So You Think You Can Dance, Misha Tchoupakov of Salt Lake City Ballet and Regional Dance America, and Lorita Travaglia of Colorado Ballet. Vanessa graduated with honors from CSU and served as CCB’s Interim Director during the 2014 Fall Semester.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

My family…husband, daughter, and 2 puppies. They are everything to me…

What is your favorite book?

The Princess by Lori Wick

How about movie?

I don’t have a favorite, but I like action and I’ll never say no to a romantic comedy

Is there a quote or saying that you live your life by?

Dance as though no one is watching, love as though you have never been hurt before, sing as though no one can hear you, and live as though heaven is on earth.

Would you rather vacation in Alaska or Hawaii, and why?

Hawaii! I love tropical places and to me, Hawaii is the ultimate place to relax. It’s like my home away from home. (I lived in Alaska for 5 years and I don’t like the cold!)

What are your hobbies?

Dancing, shopping, sports, crafts, and cooking/playing in the kitchen with my daughter Halle

If you were a superhero, what would your powers be?

Flight and speed.

What three items would you take with you on a deserted island?

Satellite phone, fully stocked luxury yacht, and of course my pointe shoes.

What is your favorite part about teaching at CCB?

Definitely spending time with my students. I love watching how they grow throughout the years, not only as beautiful dancers but into wonderful individuals.
