A Preview of Rubies: A 40th Anniversary Celebration

March 3, 2020 by Canyon Concert Ballet

CCB’s spring ballet, April 24-25th, features the Fort Collins Symphony with two brand new choreographies to the iconic work of Aaron Copland and Antonín Dvořák.  Conducted by Maestro Wes Kenney and directed by artistic director, Alicia Laumann, the evening is sure to enchant and enrich audiences.

In 1942, Aaron Copland began work on his Pulitzer Prize winning piece, Appalachian Spring.  It was a work commissioned by dance giant Martha Graham who had previously worked with the composer and who wanted to choreograph a ballet on the American experience.  Martha’s ballet tells the story of a sparsely populated religious pioneer town and is set in designer Isamu Noguchi’s highly distilled yet evocative pioneer scene.

Though Copland’s score is indelibly linked to Graham’s ballet, the score itself has gone on to widespread and enduring popularity.  The score, with only 13 instruments, invokes an early morning sunrise, a simple hymn-like melody and a country fiddle dance.  Local choreographer, Judy Bejarano, founder and director of IMPACT dance, has been commissioned to set a brand new work to this score for CCB’s spring concert, accompanied by the FCSO.  It will include a core cast of 10 dancers. In it, Bejarano acknowledges the American themes of Copland’s score working through meta ideas of arrival, assimilation and settling. When asked about the commission, Alicia Laumann, writes: “Being quite familiar with Judy’s grounded yet lush modern movement vocabulary, which she often combines so eloquently with discreet and communicative gesture, I knew that she was the perfect choreographer to take on Copland’s score.”

The second half of the program will again be accompanied by the FCSO.  Ms. Laumann’s new work is set to Antonín Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings in E major, Op. 22.  The score was composed by an optimistic, young husband and father in 1875.  In fact, he composed it in just 14 days! The piece is alternately charming and joyful, passionate and dreamy and concludes with an hommage to his native Bohemian folk music.  Laumann’s piece, simply titled “Dvořák’s Serenade,” features 27 dancers arrayed in ruby red, jeweled dresses in honor of CCB’s 40th anniversary. Laumann says about her new work, “My piece is a celebration of Dvořák’s music through color, vibrant neoclassical vocabulary and a few of my own little hommages to Slavic folk dance which typically includes intricate footwork and inventive hand holds.  My hope is that it will be a feast for the eyes and ears.”

Rubies: A 40th Anniversary Celebration

January 7, 2020 by Canyon Concert Ballet

Canyon Concert Ballet is excited to partner with the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra to bring this fabulous production to Fort Collins!

This 2019/2020 season is Canyon Concert Ballet’s 40th year as Fort Collins’ premier ballet company and school.  Since it’s our Ruby Anniversary, we are taking the year to commemorate this milestone by bringing local, historic and classical gems to you!

For our 40th Anniversary Celebration, Rubies, CCB is pulling out all the stops! Partnering with the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra for the first time for the spring ballet, CCB will premiere two new works to two orchestral gems. The program begins with beloved local choreographer, Judy Bejarano’s (founder of IMPACT Dance) contemporary interpretation of Aaron Copland’s iconic score “Appalachian Spring.” “Precious Stones,” a short excerpt of pristine classical ballet from Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty (1890) will showcase the depth of talent of CCB’s dancers. And, finally, artistic director, Alicia Laumann’s, will present a new work, accompanied by Anton Dvorak’s gorgeous and lush “Serenade for Strings in E Major, Op. 22” to complete the program.

Join us in celebrating our 40th year – get your tickets today!

This show is possible thanks to the generous support of Fort Fund.

Meet The Little Mermaid Prince

April 23, 2019 by Canyon Concert Ballet

Let us introduce Isaac Mueller!

Isaac will be dancing the role of the Prince in Canyon Concert Ballet’s production of The Little Mermaid. We are excited to have been able to ask him a few questions!

What I eat before a show: The night before is a meal loaded with carbs for energy the next day. Breakfast has good protein, 4 or 5 eggs, bacon, and maybe a bagel or waffle. Then the rest of the day is mostly liquids. Nothing that will sit in my stomach for a long time.

What gives me inspiration: I get inspiration from a lot of different things. Nothing very specific, it can just be something that rests well with me. One is definitely dancing at competitions with some of the best dancers in the world.

Last song I listened to: Love Me Tender by Elvis

What I’ve learned through Little Mermaid process: I have learned to be adaptable. Mainly to choreography I’m not used to.

Hometown: Littleton, CO

Dancing since: Started ballet at 14. Did ballroom for most of my life though. And tap dancing from 11-14

Favorite Role Performed: In a full length ballet, favorite role is Peter Pan. But favorite variation is from Paquita.

On my days off: Typically it’s spent studying and doing academics. But if I don’t have to do that, I love to go rock climbing or play soccer with my mates.

Pre-performance ritual: I also need at least a good barre. But I love to have a strong full class that puts me on my leg. Then every moment leading up to the performance is spent going over the material and rehearsing it in my head.

Favorite CCB memory: Doing Little Mermaid has been a great experience that I will always remember.

Advice for young dancers: Work your hardest every day and every moment. And remember that it’s a process. A long one at that. But you have to work every day for it. And find the joyful moments, because there are some. And that will make the process worth it.

Shoe type: Sansha pro 1C

What powers me as a dancer: This is my passion. It’s that simple. And when you get onto a beautiful stage and do what you love and thousands of people applaud for you, it’s unlike anything you will ever experience. So every day I am working towards and waiting for the next time I get to experience that.

Surprising fact: If I wasn’t a ballet dancer I would be a soccer player.

Superhero power: Batman is my favorite and he doesn’t have powers, so I would be just like Batman.

Meet The Little Mermaid

April 1, 2019 by Canyon Concert Ballet

Let us introduce Jenna Smith!

Jenna will be dancing the role of Little Mermaid in Canyon Concert Ballet’s production of The Little Mermaid. We are excited to have been able to ask her a few questions!

What has this role allowed you to learn about yourself?Throughout this process I have learned a lot about having patience for myself and my body and giving things the time they need to sink in. Also, how to really immerse myself in a character! It’s been so fun!

What advice would you give to aspiring young dancers?Don’t lose yourself in the “seriousness” of it all. Dance is SO fun when you let yourself go! Don’t. Give. Up.

What is your inspiration?Definitely music. I am a classical pianist and singer as well as dancer, so music has always been a big part of my life.

What is your favorite ballet?Swan Lake has ALWAYS been my favorite!
Loves?Reading, sharks, plants, Saturday morning class.

This Weekend! CCB’s Spring Show: Les Sylphides & Etudes

April 24, 2018 by Canyon Concert Ballet

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

After months of hard work from the amazing village it takes to put on a performance, this weekend is Les Sylphides & Etudes!  This is a very unique show, and very different from our usual spring ballet.

  • Les Sylphides is a Romantic Period masterpiece.  It is a one-act, plotless work populated by beautiful, ethereal, other-worldly female dancers.  This ballet also will feature guest artist Adrian Fry!
  • Etudes is our Artistic Director Alicia Laumann’s answer to “what should a 21st century ballerina look like?”.  With nine pieces choreographed to Chopin’s piano works (played live on a grand piano, onstage with the dancers, by Dr. Silvana Santinelli!), this act will feature guest artist Nick Blaylock.
  • We also have our very own Matthew Harvey as a guest artist for a piece from Giselle to round out this stunning show!
This is a show you do not want to miss!

Tickets are on sale here or by calling the Lincoln Center box office at 970-221-6730

See you this weekend!
