CCB Summer Intensive: Why You Should Participate

January 31, 2018 by Canyon Concert Ballet

ballet classThoughts from Artistic Director, Alicia Laumann

Over the last several weeks, Abby Behm, our CCB School Director, and I have been busy organizing a thoughtful, rigorous, and fun Summer Intensive for June 11-23.  This Summer Intensive is for our CCB dance family as well as all dancers in the region who might want to participate.  In planning the intensive, I started to reminisce about my own summer intensive pathway.  After my 6th and 7th grade years, I attended a larger local studio’s summer intensive for 2 and 3 weeks, respectively.  I went on to attend some fairly prestigious summer intensives:  a summer at San Francisco Ballet, one at Cleveland Ballet, one at Ballet Austin, and one, my favorite, in Budapest, Hungary.

But aside from Budapest, my best memories are still from those early local intensives.  I still remember getting home at the end of the day so sore and so tired I would sit in the lazy boy the rest of the evening watching TV!  I also remember the west African classes we took.  The newness of the style, the live drumming, and being combined with “the big girls” all made for an invigorating experience that stuck with me.  Finally, though I was a bit nervous in my various classes, mostly I remember how much fun I had.  Over 30 years later, I still remember just how the kitchen at the local studio looked and all of us sitting around on the floor with our lunches spread out each day.  (In contrast, I remember grabbing a bagel and eating alone on the steps in San Francisco.)

Pulling from those memories, here is what participating dancers should expect from the experience at the summer intensive:

  1.  A physically, intellectually, and stylistically challenging week.  They should expect to be sore and tired at the end of the day.  This is a good thing!  It means they are growing and getting stronger.
  2.  A diverse curriculum that will expose them to new genres of dance.  Immersing themselves in styles outside their comfort zone can be eye-opening and influential for future career pathways.  The benefits of diversified training can last beyond a single summer!
  3.  Fun and friendship.  Spending all day with other dancers is a socially connecting and rewarding experience.

The intensive is open to all dancers in CCB levels 3 and up, and to all non-CCB dancers with appropriate experience.  Visit here for all information and to register!

CCB 2018 Summer Intensive Registration Now Open

January 16, 2018 by Canyon Concert Ballet

The Canyon Concert Ballet School Summer Intensive offers a unique 2-week program.  Week 1, June 11-16th, offers a Ballet Concentration.  Week 2, June 18-23rd, offers a Contemporary Concentration.  Today’s dance world demands a versatile dancer.  This unique 2 week intensive offers the training today’s aspiring dancers need.  While each week may be taken individually, we highly recommend enrolling in both weeks for the full benefits of the intensive.

Our internationally renowned guest instructors/ choreographers will inspire growth and renewal for all participants and prepare those students training for the demands of a professional career in an intimate, safe and nurturing environment.  Focus is placed on developing the whole dancer by offering classes according to 4 levels determined by an initial placement class.  Each week is designed to give students an immersive experience in classical ballet or contemporary genres and will allow students the opportunity to get to know the teachers and explore each genre more thoroughly.

In the Ballet Concentration, classes will be offered in ballet technique, pointe, variations, ballet choreography, Pilates, injury prevention and nutrition, pointe shoe selection and care and ballet history.  Each day will conclude with a classical ballet or contemporary ballet repertoire class (for Levels 3 and 4) where students will learn selections to be presented at the end of the week showcase.

In the Contemporary Concentration, in addition to daily ballet classes, students will enjoy classes in contemporary ballet, modern, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, musical theatre, and Pilates, as well as lectures on injury prevention, nutrition, and dance history.  Students will have the option in repertoire class of learning selections from a musical theater or learning a new contemporary choreography, both which will be presented on the final day of the intensive.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity you will not want to miss!  We educate not just the dancer, but the whole person!

Learn more about our 2018 Summer Intensive on our website here, and you can find the registration form here.

Quiz for a Cause, Benefiting CCB!

January 9, 2018 by Canyon Concert Ballet

Quiz for a Cause for Canyon Concert Ballet’s pointe shoe fund! Bring $5 cash per person to donate for your team, and play some fun trivia with a chance to win free drinks and gift cards.

Donated money goes towards our pointe shoe fund for our company dancers. Company dancers actually dance as volunteers for Canyon Concert Ballet, putting in hundreds of hours for each performance we bring to the community like the Nutcracker! Many company dancers are high school and college students, so affording pointe shoes as volunteer dancers is a financial strain for most of them – Our volunteer company dancers are spending over $1000/year on pointe shoes alone!

To help with their amazing commitment to dance and CCB, we support them with a new pair pointe shoes for each performance.  Your donations go towards helping us provide these fabulous dancers with pointe shoes!
